"A Slice of Life" Poem |
During our first week together in class, we discussed everything ELA has in store for you this year and started to explore the first unit's essential questions. One of the questions we will tackle together is, "What kinds of challenges do people face and how do they overcome them?" Thinking about this week in ELA, discuss some of the challenges that you have already faced as a 7th grader, or some challenges you anticipate facing as the year progresses. You may want to include specific evidence from our discussions in class, or the poem "A Slice of Life". If you have any questions about class this year, feel free to ask them in your blog entry. I have not faced many problems yet this year, just anticipation and anxiety about what’s to come. The only problems I can foresee affecting me in the future is the stress of tests and large amounts of homework. I am worried about getting a lot of homework, or losing my notes, or not being able to keep up. It’s just small worries currently, but it may increase in the future. Otherwise, no problems have come to mind when I think about 7th grade.

Time management will be the number one skill to develop this year! If you can stay on top of things by using your agenda, making lists, leaving yourself little notes or reminders, or any other strategy you can think of, you will be just fine!

A challenge that I have already faced as a seventh grader is trying to dress appropriately to the dress code. I understand that the dress code is meant to help students dress accordingly to better their education, but the way they enforce it is just unfair. They never measure the length of our shorts, they just look at us and tell us that they’re too short. A challenge that I anticipate facing this year is the amount of work that my classes will require. It might be hard to keep up will all of the assignments.

I appreciate your patience with the dress code. We do have structures like it in place for a reason, but it's good to hear your honest opinion. If you are passionate about addressing your concerns regarding how strict it is, definitely use this as a writing topic this year. Don't be afraid to approach an administrator with your concerns. Be an advocate for what you are passionate about!

This year has had its struggles. Such as finding our classes or opening our jammed lockers, but what are some real life struggles in class? Maybe getting ready and catching the bus in time. What about getting enough sleep so you don’t get angry at our friends and family, how about doing chores and finishing homework in time. This year has had its fair share of struggles, but how do we overcome them. How about having a good attitude. I think all of these things are very real and everyone experiences them just ask. Life can treat you like gold one second them come crashing down on you, like in "a slice of life".

The struggles I think that I will have are my grades, turning my work in, homework and being the best I can be. Some of the struggles I am having now is forgetting to turn in papers and where my locker is because there are too many people and I don’t have enough room to get locker without being pushed and shoved and I want to push them back but I know I’m better than that.

Way to hold yourself accountable for your impulses! A crowded hallway can be a source of frustration, and the fact that you show self restraint in letting out that frustration is very mature. Eventually, you will settle into a routine and your stress should go down. Maybe start by planning out fewer locker visits so it won't be such an issue.

So far as a seventh grader, I’ve noticed that things have been a lot more organized than they had been last year, for last year there was out-of-control bullying, and it really hurt to see so many people being picked on. So having this problem fixed, I am more eager to continue the school year. But some challenges that I have faced so far is a little bit more difficulty than last year, which is a good challenge because this is seventh grade, and we don’t want to be learning things that sixth graders learn. Another challenge is a challenge I have made for myself, which is I wish to read 50 books or more. I hope that this blog is good (which it most likely is not), and that it’s ‘interesting’ to read.

I love your positive thinking! I feel honored to know that you feel things are organized this year, and I will be sure to communicate that to the whole team of teachers. It is wonderful to hear that you are setting the bar high for yourself this year. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help you meet those goals.

What a well written response! It sounds like you've got a great organizational plan. I would encourage you to share your ideas with peers who may be struggling with keeping things in order. Using your agenda and phone together sounds like a great plan. That way you have a back up if you forget to bring one of those items somewhere with you. Good luck!

In 6th grade we faced many challenges through the year. As we went through there was more and more work to do. I anticipate that it will be like that in 7th grade too. One of the challenges I face is my locker. It gets stuck a lot and it has a nail at the bottom of it. Many people struggle with homework, busy schedules and more. We can overcome them by working around schedules to do homework. That is how I overcome challenges like that. I like using my agenda to write all of my homework. Also I like using planners to help with problems. I anticipate there being many challenges in 7th grade.

Sounds like you've got some great solutions in mind already. Also, acknowledging that the workload is going to increase is a great way to prepare for it mentally. I spoke with Mr. Waggoner about your locker, and he said that he would set you up with a new one! I hope this helps reduce your frustration between classes.

I haven’t faced any problems yet in 7th grade but I am still trying to get used to specials in the middle of the day. The things that I am worried about are being late to class and turning in an assignment late because this year is different from last year, our principle is a lot stricter this year. Other than those two things I am not really worried about anything else. – madi smith

They say that change is good, and I'm glad to hear that, despite your concerns, you seem on board for the challenges ahead! Just think, next year, you will be adjusting to having specials first thing in the morning! As far as assignments are concerned, just try to stay on top of things by using your agenda. You could also dedicate one folder to homework so that everything stays in the same place!

Now that you've acknowledge your areas of struggle, come up with a plan of action. If you know you are going to talk, maybe talk to the teacher about moving your seat, or find something to distract you like doodling or writing at your desk. Instead of anticipating bad grades, tell yourself that you are going to get the best grades that you can by putting forward your best effort!

People in 7th grade have challenges all the time. There challenges may go from low grades to bullying. So far the only problems that I have experienced is that I’ve been having trouble organizing my locker. The problems with organizing is that since I have all of my stuff at the bottom of my locker which causes it to be a little confusing to find things. I also think I will have trouble keeping track of due dates throughout the school year which may be harder to handle as the year progresses and more projects an homework are due. I have no questions through the year so that is what are challenging me in the school year and what I expect to be a problem.

Great job outlining the things that you know will prove to be difficult. Come up with a new organizational structure for your locker. Maybe ask for a locker shelf or pick a specific side for each subject's materials to sit on. Let know if you need some help! Use your agenda strategically through the year to keep track of your assignments. You've got this!

The challenge I faced in 7th grade this year was getting my locker. First my TA teacher gave me one locker then Mr.Waggner gave me a different one. This year I went to my locker and it had a zip tie. I also went around the whole 7th grade looking for my locker. My friend Aneiya had to help me also Mr.Waggner had to help me find it too. When I finally found it I was thinking in my head ik I did not go all around the 7th grade hallway to find my locker with a zip tie.

As a 7th grader this year, I know I will face some challenges and I already am. I am not the best at math, so I realize that it will be hard and I will have some trouble. Some challenges that I have faced already are getting in trouble for dress code, so it’s hard to find clothes that will meet the proper dress code. Another problem I have faced is a little bit of a hard time reviewing math problems in math class. As the poem “A Slice of Life” says, “What’s as confusing as last weeks science lab? Ca be as sweet as sugar? Then, sharp as a knife?” This explains that school can have some challenges, but it can get really sweet.

I'm not that great at math either! Acknowledge a struggle is the first step in tackling it head on. You should talk with Olivia about the dress code as she also had some concerns about it. If the two of you have and ideas or things you think might need to be reconsidered, write about them or feel free to talk to an administrator.

Some challenges which I have seen mainly with other 7th graders is mainly bullying. Sometimes 7th graders are the victims and sometimes they bully others. We should overcome this by focusing in other extra curricular activities and doing other hobbies while being focused o your education too.

I haven't faced any problems yet this year. But i know i will some thing i know people will face is grades. People struggle to keep there grades up because of many reasons like sports or stress. Like a "Slice in life'' says life can bring you up to the stars or sprawl you against a rock like grades. I know people struggle with these things because i have struggled with grades to. I also think people struggle with what friends thing of them which can lead to stress and not doing school work. I know this will happen to some people because i have seen it. These are some problems i think people will face this year.

I haven't faced any problems this year and I hope not to. I feel like I'm going to go through problems with my grades or other things because 7th grade is a lot harder than 6th and I'm kind of nervous because the way Slice of Life explained how being in middle school is difficult.

Just stay on top of things, and stay positive. Tell yourself that you can handle whatever comes your way. You'd be surprised what kind of an impact just reminding yourself of that can have.

So far this year I haven't had any struggles exept my locker being to small. Some struggles I will probaly face this year is most likely with math because math is the hardest subject for me. I don't think it will be as bad because all of my teachers are really nice and I think seventh grade will be really fun. I have had a good time in seventh grade so far and I am really excited for all of the fun things in seventh grade and this year is gonna be really fun. So far, there has not been many challenges, but then again, its only day four. I'm not worried much about challenges. I think they will all be minor problems like too much homework or fighting the clock to get to class on time. My main concern this year is getting all the way to computer class in the 6th grade hallway back to 7th grade, my locker, then math class all in four minutes. The whole 3rd and 4th period specials thing will take some time to adjust too. I am also a bit concerned about all the work this year. If last year was anything to go by, we'll have a lot of homework and a lot of classwork. But I am convinced I can make it through this year with little trouble. I'm going to be the person from the "Slice of Life" poem who tells others to live it to the fullest. Ava Connolly

So glad to hear your positive thought process! If you prepare for a big work load, then you will be able to handle it more smoothly. As far as specials are concerned, I know where you are coming from. Last year, I had to wheel my cart down to the reading lab in the sixth grade hallway after first period, and be on time and ready to teach second period. Could you carry your things for math with you to your specials on that day so you don't have to stop by your locker?

The article I read was about how to cook barbeque foods.it also has procedures during cooking to ensure you don't get sick or cook it wrong. My guess that putting food on the same plate that had raw food on it can cause a disease and my guess was confirmed.
